I usually wash my guns with Moose Milk and then rinse them with scalding hot water from my tap and have never had any flash rust.  Last week I used the Windex w/vinegar which cleaned well but I did get some flash rust from the hot water.   YMMV

Big "Thanks pardners!" to Driftwood and Mako.

(I'm in the Utah Territory, so it's a fairly dry climate. Also, I use the guns in question pretty much weekly, if not more often. So, no long-term storage issues.)
This may the biggest contributor to rust free guns...lots of usage.  That applies to my woodworking tools as well.  When I wasn't on the road every week and actually got to use them regularly I never had a problem.

I beg to difer with the pard who put Goex and pyrodex in the same class when it comes to cleaning. I don't think you have shot enough of the Goex and are very wrong about it. I shoot at least 3 SASS matches a month with 100% black powder. I will not use a sub in my guns. I can't for the life of me figure out how a pard can shoot any sub and then say that he is a black powder shooter. You are not a black powder shooter nor can you say how to clean it. I shoot on Saturday and for the most part don't clean my guns until Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. I have USFA revolvers, Uberti rifle in a 73 model and TNN shotgun. I clean with Moosemilk and then add EEZOX to all moving parts and exterior to protect from rust. I have never had one spot of rust on any guns. The reason the people in the 1800's used water and soap is that is what they had and it was cheap, free for the most part. In this time we have much better products that work and your guns will be here to pass down. When water dries it leaves nothing behind that protects the gun. It does how ever leave the rust process to start. Ballistol made into Moosemilk leaves Ballistol when it dries. If you are not a user of EEZOX then you should at least look at it. This forum has a test done by John Boy that can only make you a user after seeing it. All the Subs will do serious damage if not cleaned after shooting. This is a picture of my SXS after it was fired by a so called gunsmith with Pyrodex shells and the shipped back to me via UPS for a 4 day trip.
