Pards...you would  not  believe the difference after Bill English does his conversion on these pistols..I just  got  mine  back today and I am impressed to say the least, smooooooth as silk, doesn't feel like the same pistol it is so fluid. My thanks to HAP for his expertise..and a fine gentleman to deal with.  If you want to experience the most out of your Schofield..well, he is indeed " the man "    Doc

Rocky Jones

Yeah,
I'd like to know more about the conversion too. Sounds like what I would like to have done to mine.
Thanks

I beleive you can find the converision information at

thesmithshop.com

The converision allows the schofield action to work if your finger is on the trigger, much like a Colt Clone.

The schofield design requires the trigger not be touched by the trigger finger while it is being cocked
the converision changes that and all the work is internal

What Beans said...but no doubt he could make them shoot black powder...a very gifted fellow, send him an e-mail about the BP needs, I`m sure he could do something.  Doc

Virginia Gentleman

To make them shoot black powder well won't they have to install some kind of gas ring/shield?

Doc,

How long did it take Bill English to smooth out yer top breaks?
I have a pair on its way as we speak, n I don't want just anyone workin on my guns. :-\
I want ONLY the best. ;D ;D ;D

Lightning, didn't you notice that this post is six years old!?  Bill English has long since retired.

From Bill's website, today (3/25/11):

"As of August 30, 2009 The Smith Shop will no longer be accepting repairs or conversion work.  We will however continue to manufacture and provide our product line of Cowboy Gun Components.

Thanks to all of my customers who supported me for all these years.  I've had one of the best jobs in the shooting world.  Just what I've wanted to do since I was 10 years old............ play with guns all day long."

Glad I looked though, as I've been looking for a stainless follower for my Marlin 38/357 and he lists those there.

ps:  Back "On topic"... I WILL be shooting my Schofield .38 tomorrow -- yahoo!

Since Mr. English is no longer doing these conversions, does anyone else do this or do we know exactly what and how it was done in the event one could find another smith willing to try their hand?

Slow down....you will get a more harmonious out come....

He use to have photos on his web site, but I see that now that he no longer does the work he has removed the photos.  What he did is well known.  The Schofield bolt operates off the trigger and if you are touching the trigger while trying to cock the gun, it won't cock.  Bad for duelists.  I never could get any speed up with the Schofields (this is in addition to the crummy grip/hammer angle).  What he did was put a cam on the hammer and make an entirely new bolt and modify the frame so the bolt operates off the hammer like a Colt.  The Schofield isn't all that popular in the first place so I doubt we'll find anyone that loves unusual mods as much as Bill did to invest the time and money in tooling up to modify Schofields.  Sure would be nice though.
