OUCH, Chuck, sounds like you had one of those worse than average days, I can see how that would take your mind off your head ache, pack that puppy in ice, and you'll be good as new, ( in a few days ) don't worry about being a little harsh, I would be the last to through rocks at that glass window, feel better soon pard. :D ;D

I'm just throwing this out... please don't yell at me for it cuz it is a non-traditional concept ya'all  ;)

I buy my dye, sorry... I just got too many irons in the fire to make my own, but I have been watching the discussions for educational purposes anyway.

I see that part or much of the goal here is to increase the tannin content in the homebrew dye.

So, I thought I'd mention, for whatever value it has or doesn't have, that tannic acid in powder form can be purchased at any decent home brew shop.

I don't know if knowing this is a help to anyone or not, but hoping it is.

I think that Walnut shell tumbling media is most likely from the English walnut because very little black walnut is grown for commercial use. The walnuts found in stores around Christmas time are English walnuts. Their shells have been bleached to make them look nice and I would think be a poor material to try to make die from.
American black walnuts are a different thing altogether and their shells may be just the ticket for making die. I think also that the very best is to use the husks weather green or after they have been dried. I will pick up a bunch this year as there are several large trees within 1/4 mile of my shop and nobody picks them up.
Have fun!!  ;)

Oh by the way, Some say to add alcohol to prevent mold groth in the Walnut die. The company that sold me the ground husks said to add vinegar to prevent mold.

What say you guys??

I ordered some of the ground up walnut from the site given by Chuck 100 yd at

I was wondering how that came out. How long do you soak the powder ? Leather?
God is fluxing me which is good but it is not fun.
