just lookin to see if any of you shooters have tried a 400 or 420 grn lead in the 45/60 carbines or any 1876 for that matter.
i tried a 405 with 19 grn of 5744 powder it seemed ok no sign of to much pressure, and was acurate.
i trceived some 420 grn gas checked lead and would like to use them in the 76.............
any info would be apreciated..........RAM

If you search you might find where there was discussion of this early in the history of the forum.  That applied to the .45-75 cartridge though.

well i tried  3 rounds of 420grn gas checked lead with 4 greese groves
23grn of 5744 powder.
at 50 yards the group was about 3/4 inch . no sign of high pressure felt real good.
shot in the nwmp carb, cross fire trail mod. from uberti.
goin to go out and try them at 100&200 yards now .
this is not something i am telling you to do , but its workin out so far for me. should be a good hunting load
goin to chronagragh them.

On page 124 of the Herbert G. Houze book "The Winchester Model 1876 Centennial Rifle" he shows a cut from the May 1,1878 general sales catalog of a "Winchester 1876 Long range".  The .45-75 case was loaded with 450 gr. paper patch bullet and 90 gr. of powder.  These were to be loaded one at a time as a single shot.  With 90 gr. of powder (if that much powder could even be put into the .45-75 case) the over all case length would prohibit anything other than single shot function.  Using smokless powder I see how you could load 405 or 420 grain bullets and still retain the repeater function with the .45-60 or .45-75 case.  Good luck and be careful with your experimentation.

well i am happy with the load, it chrono's at 1200fps  at 100yrds about a 3 inch group ( did not have a good rest ) i think thats a good excuse . i have some 405 grn heads back east , i will try them with 23 grn 5744 they might shoot better than the 420's .
i tried 300 grn jhp by hornady and they shoot a one hole group at 50 yrd with 26 grn of 5744 nice huntin load there.....
ok i will play some more, realy like that rifle ........ram
