Sewing a small toe plug?

Here's a pic of a Paterson 'scabbard' I just started.  The black holster is actually for another gun, but the toe plug is, or will be, about the same small size.   I haven't figured out a good way to sew this little thing! My main thread way to heavy, and the stitching will get so tight at the plug, I'm afraid it will tear.  I saw willghormleys technique for a, I think a larger holster.  I made the plug from 2 layers heavy leather and glued it in place.  BTW, when did 'scabbards' become holsters? Any suggestions?  Bill
