Looking for info on my friends Spencer Carbine, the Serial No. is 47537, It is one that went on later in its life to the refinishing center at the Springfield Armory, seems to have the repairs and Modification characteristics noted in Marcot's Book. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dana

Dana,

Can you describe the modifications better?  Does it have a Stabler Cutoff? Why do you think it went to Springfield?  Photos especially of the top of the receiver?

Two Flints,

It has the Burnside type Stabler Device, the barrel has been sleeved with the 3 Groove liner, its has the spring assist blade extractor, Its hard to read the marking on the top. Its made to load single shot, has the rounded edges. I'm pretty sure it has the 22" barrel. I hope this helps you, he does not have a computer so I'm doing this from memory.

Dana,

Probably one of the 1860 Spencer Carbines that was sent to Springfield between 1866 and 1874.

The serial # of your friend's Spencer Carbine 47537 falls in between two listed serial #s in my Volume 4 SRS book.  A Spencer Carbine serial # 47531 was issued to a member of Co E, 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry on or about September, 1864; the other Spencer Carbine, serial # 47545, was issued to a member of Company D, 1st Vermont Volunteer Cavalry on or about February, 1865.

So, you can draw your own conclusions from the above information.  Other members of SSS may offer their own opinions, too.

Hope this helps.
