I just received a new book that would be of interest to those of us who are or like to portray Marines in our Era of Expansion matches.  I've only skimmed through it once but here is my initial take:

Equipping the Corps, 1892-1937, Vol I: Webgear, Weapons, and Headgear by Alec S. Tultkoff.  The book includes a multitude of photographs of every item and the text describes the item and when it was issued and worn.

Chapter 1 covers field gear, including blanket bags, packs, haversacks, rifle and pistol belts, canteens, and other items, including mounted accoutrements used by officers and other mounted Marines.  Of particular interest to me was the large number of photographs of Marines wearing these items prior to US entry into WWI.  What was worn was anything but uniform.

Chapter 2 covers the weapons: 1884 Springfield, Lee-Navy Straightpull, M1896 and M1898 Krag, and M1903 Springfield rifles, and the M1889, M1905, M1909 and M1911 pistols and their holsters.  Also covered, but outside our era of interest are machine guns and automatic rifles.  Much to my surprise, I learned the Marines were armed with the Winchester M1897 shotgun as early as 1910-11.

Chapter 3 covers headgear, to include the famous field hat.

This new book should prove to be a valuable resource for anyone wishing to portray an Era of Expanision Marine.

Sir,
That looks like an excellent book!  I just looked at a preview online and it's evident it makes most others, such as Brassey's and Osprey, look like Little Golden Books.  It's just a little rich for my blood right now, but I'll get one eventually!

I will admit that it was also a bit rich for my blood as well, but I'm glad I bought it.  I'm taking it with me to the NCOWS Convention to read on the plane.  Its a bit heavy to be lugging around but should help the time pass quickly.
