Hi Y'all,

I'm in the process of making a one piece grip for a SAA.  As soon as I finish checkering the grips, I'll glue in the spacer, etc.  Question, though.  I'm assuming the only way to remove them once the spacer is glued in, due to the alignment pin, is spread them and slip them off.  Is there another way?  Any hints on how to be sure they don't crack when I slip them off?  Should I knock the alignment pin back out and file it down a tad to help prevent cracking?

Pettifogger

If you have one piece grips there should be no alignment pin.

The spacer should be contoured to fit snug against the inside edges of the back strap and also clear the main spring. When made correctly the back strap will hold the grip in place once screwed to the frame of the gun and the bottom of the trigger guard grip frame. No alignment pin is needed, as previously mentioned.

These pards have pointed you in the right direction, get the pin out, like Pettifogger points out, pins are only used for two piece grips, and make sure the insert is contoured to fit the back strap, as Amin said, when ever you want to remove a one piece grip like on the SAA, you only need to remove the two top back strap screws, and the one screw at the bottom that secures the back strap to the trigger guard, then just rock the grip back and remove.

I've been debating the utility of the alignment pin.  I already contoured the spacer to fit the backstrap, so I guess I'll knock the pin back out.

Thanks.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Collins one piece grip kit. It has an ingenious grip spacer & will make things easier for you.  ;)

When you get to the point of gluing up your grips and spacer, be sure to use a release agent on the frames.  Or ..... your grips will be a PERMANENT part.  I use vasilene.

If you dont remove pin. the new grips will be glued in and locked over the pin. no way to remove unless you snap the the glue joint free.

For sure remove the pin for one piece grips.

Talk about grips that cost as much as the gun:

Here are my Great Westerns with a set of real elephant ivory grips. It looked so good I got a matching GW and did it again. Grips are from Boone Traders in Washington....
