I just got some Blackhorn 209 B-P substitute in to test.

Are any of you pards shooting this stuff?

I assume it works OK with smokeless lubed bullets?

Anything I ought to watch out for?

Good one August! ;D

Actually I buy Goex by the case. But not everyone lives in a state where that is easily accomplished. So, I'll occasionally do a column on substitutes for those folks use use them, whether by choice or because of lack of choice.

As I recall it's not legal for SASS matches.

If it has nitrocellulose content it's not.  The handbook specifically bars them from use in BP categories.

From the COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING™ 2011 Shooters Handbook
Quote• Throughout this manual, blackpowder means blackpowder, or a blackpowder substitute such
as Pyrodex, 777, APP, or comparable propellants intended for muzzle loading firearms.
Propellants containing nitrocellulose are prohibited as blackpowder substitutes. Any
combination of smokeless and blackpowder (so called duplex loads) is specifically
prohibited.

I remember reading somewhere (probably on The Open Range) that Dutch Bill and others have done some analysis and their opinion is that it has a nitrocellulose base.

First thing to look at is the pressure the crap developes.
Then take a look at the cost.
And if neither one of those two are enough to scare you out of using it, then there's not much hope .... ::)

Even in states that only allow a limited amount of bp to be purchased at one time Grafs , Powder Inc, and Buffalo Arms will ship  black powder in 5 lb or less lots..

I didn't realize it wasn't SASS legal. Since that's the case there isn't much point in doing a column on it.

Mike,
Other than it would be kind of stepping back in time, so to speak, to the era of semi-smokeless powders for those that would have an interest.

Thanks John Boy,
I can usually remember where I have read something. Of course it's not hard since Bill was involved and we know where he haunts.

P.S. thanks for the link

The SASS Wild Bunch made a posting on Blackhorn 209 not long ago. It was said that the powder was made to shot from in-line rifles using the 209 primer for ignition and was a smokeless powder base. It was ruled not to be used in SASS
