I would like to try my hand at building a rig similar to the one in this picture, but I can't seem to figure out how the long strap works.
Would someone who has one show me with pictures?? ;D
Thanks much!!..

I believe the strap goes down to the opposite side of the waist and he belt is slid through the loop in the strap ... and I believe the purpose is to keep the holster and gun from flopping forward when the wearer is leaning forward ....

the single strap goes around the backside of your  neck and goes down the right front shoulder to the belt.
does not look comfortable to me at all.

i suggest you contack hidecrafter and order this pattern:  SHOULDER HOLSTER PAT SKU: 6000-68
first pic is the pattern package
2nd pic is the shoulder rig i made using the pattern package. i believe its the same basic style that doc holiday wore in tomestone(not the kevin costner version)

while looking at hidecrafter.com to get this information to you correctly i noticed that Jim R. Simmons now has serval patterns available from hidecrafter. he also has different pattern packages for the same shoulder holster. so go to hidecrafter.com and read about them.
his pattern packs are very easy and well layed out to follow.

Looks good Rayban!!!
Did you make the Jim Simmons two piece pouch, or did you make it as a 1 piece?
I am working on a pair off of his pattern now, and am making them according to the instructions. I am not sure I like the 2 piece pouch...

This shoulder holster is worn as follows: The large loop that is part of the holster pouch is worn over the left shoulder, i.e., put your left arm through the loop.  The narrow strap can be worn on of several ways - with the strap connected as shown in the photo, the strap goes behind the neck, over the front of the right shoulder and then down to attach to your trousers belt.  Another way is for the strap to go in front of the right shoulder, then under the right armpit and around the back and to attach it to the yoke or the skirt of the holster.  In that case, the holster is put on like one would put on a vest.

The way these were worn in the Old West, was that the strap went down the back of the right shoulder and connected to the holster yoke so the strap went across the wearer's chest, under the vest that most folks wore.  Worn that way, the gun grip was pulled in closer to the body.  The other ways, there isn't the pull on the front of the holster. IMHO, none of these are comfortable over the long haul.

DM,

my version of Jim Simmons holster(pic above in this post) I made it as a one piece for holster.
I decided to make one piece and save time on sewing.
didnt have to modify the pattern very much mainly just put the front of the holster pattern against the back pattern where it would have been sewin up and trqaced it as one piece. real simple to modify.

I used one of Will's patterns for the holster itself...modded the top to attach to the "U" shaped piece like Al Stohlman shows, in his "how to Make Holsters" book.......saw the sling configuration I liked somewhere else on the internet....thought the bullet loops would come in handy...forget where I saw those, but they are all over the place.....I'm looking forward to doing the next one.

Springfield Slim

Not really a "shoulder" holster, more of a "bandoleer" holster. Nice for someone who wants the gun in the same place but doesn't want all that weight on their belt.
