Grandson's Birthday Present

My grandson, Hunter, turned 6 this past week. I made a belt to match this holster I made a while back. The holster is lined and ended up being a little too tight for a Vaquero, but it fits this cap gun just fine. He loves guns and Harleys, and can't wait to go shoot.

JD,

Anyone can pick a present up off the store shelf ... and kids get that younger and younger ... but a present that someone made with love and forethought, time and patience ... well , that is priceless!
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

His other grandpa has a number of dirt and road bikes and shoots, as does his dad, so he can't help but want to shoot and ride.

His mother (my daughter) will make sure the belt and holster stick around.

I'm making a purse for his sister's birthday in May.

Looks great JD and I am sure that one day he will have great pride in where it came from.  In a few years it will be time for you to think about teaching him the trade.  If time permits I want to let my apprentice make some belts, holsters and a leather cowboy hat during the summer.  Giving a razor sharp knife to a boy is a very scary thought though???

Many things will come and go but that is something he will cherish as he gets older.

I would have given anything for a rig like that when I was a little pard, you're a good Grandpa JD, your Grandson will never forget what you took the time to make him, heck that rig should still be around for your Great Great Grand kids, Well done.

Boy . . . what a great gift JD!  Your grandson will keep and treasure those the rest of his life and hopefully he'll pass 'em on to his kids as well.  There are some things that money just can't buy . . . . the love of a grandparent and the things their loving hands make for their grandchildren.  Thanks for sharing and putting a smile on all of our faces today!  And Happy Birthday to that fine looking grandson of yours!   :)

Cool JD! I just made Wesley a little holster and belt last Friday, but I cant get it from him long enough to do the edges and finish it. If your grandson loves his as much as my boy loves his, good for you!

Thanks very much guys, I appreciate it. He's my first, and very important to my wife & I, as is his younger sister, their mother and our son. There just isn't anything more important in the earthly sphere than family in my book, and obviously in most of yours too.

Dalton, unless time has slipped by quicker than I remember, Wesley would be wanting to chew on that thing before trying to wear it, or has he grown up faster than I remember? It doesn't seem all that long ago that he came into this world.

KT, I'm not OLD enough to be making things for great grandkids yet ;D

OK, I'm old enough, I just didn't get started soon enough, truth be told :P

Finally, if Bobby Rose happens to see this post, I wonder if he recognizes the holster? This is the first Slim Jim I made, and I made it in a class he taught at the Portland Tandy store.

Thanks again guys for the kind comments, JD

That's beautiful, JD. He'll have that for the rest of his life. You're giving him memories as well as something to carry his cap gun. Great work, there.

JD - You can tell by his expression that he is loving it, and like others have said, he will cherish it when he gets older.

JD,

this is whats its all about, seeing the expression on your grandson's face when you gave him the holster and belt..
pure priceless.

i still have the wallet that my grandfather made for me in the 70's.  someday i am going to make a shadow box to put the wallet into and display it on the wall. no way am i going to use it now.

also you did a great job on the holster and belt.

hope to see you at bobbys class on the 18th

Thanks again for the positive comments fellas, and he really does enjoy it. He put it on a wore it the rest of the evening. We were at a kids party place called Bullwinkles, so I left the cap gun in the car. I didn't want to upset anyone with a quite real looking gun in the building full of kids

Dalton, has it really been two years? Holy Cow times files! I saw your article in the Chronicle, along with Freda & Wesley's picture. You did a good job writing up your shoot.

Knucklehead, I won't be able to make the class this time, I have a conference to attend that day with about 30 guys from our church. I hope Bobby can follow through with a class on concealed holsters and knife sheaths, like he talked about at Chan's last class in Portland. He does a good job teaching the trade.

Thanks for the kind words JD. I didnt fluff it up much, as I am quite fluffy enough as is.

As for just wearing a holster and not the pistola into stores and such, Woody in Toy Story does it that way too.
