Ok, so I picked up my first 73 today. Well, like the curious fellow I am, I took the side plates off to have a look. I knew that the side plates make it easier to clean and whatnot but I didnt know that the parts would just fall out of the gun.  ???

Well I now have two parts of the gun.....that are NOT in the gun and need to get them back the proper way. Anyone know where to find a schematic or something?

I figured it out. Man, that was easy. I guess I see what all the fuss is about with these 73s.

Thanks

Good.  Saves me, in a cruel moment, having to say anyone that can't figure out how to put the links back in a 73 shouldn't be allowed to own a screw driver.

I just jumped the gun when parts started falling out of the gun. Then after a min I decided to look....and wouldnt you know.....easy as pie.

That's why people like 73's.  Reliable and easy to take apart for an occasional complete cleaning.

Yeah, I heard they were easy but didnt think they were that simple. Those side plates really make a difference.

This one seems to have had an action job and possibly short stroked. How would one tell if it has been short stroked?

Yep, they are a great gun!

Learn how the whole thing goes together.  Last match I had a bulged case slip through the cracks and into the magazine.  Full disassembly to get the stinker out of the rifle.  It jammed me up on the second shot because it wouldn't chamber.  I had the rifle completely apart and back together with enough time to load and shoot the next stage with an 11 person posse.  Just make sure that you  have a gun smithing screwdriver with you with ALL of the correct tips.  I replaced my Lever and Lifter spring screws with Torx heads and had to raid the tool box in the truck :-[.  Live and learn ;D

I usually get to know my guns. I have had my 92s apart many times. Even did a NKJ action job on one of them. I usually like to know how things work. I just didnt expect the insides of this rifle to come apart so easy. (fall out of gun). Thought something may  have broke. I have not fired this one yet. Got it used though.

One other caveat. Looking at your last photo, right above the front pivot of the toggle link. See that little drift pin? It will fall out, trust me. ::)
