What goes where?

I'm new to this and don't want to make an expensive mistake.
When ordering my first belt and holsters, which normally goes where? The reason I ask is that I'll be using 3 different revolvers, although, of course, only two at a time.
A Colt clone with 4.75" barrel, another clone with 5.5" barrel, and a Remington 1875 with 7.5" barrel.
Now it would seem to me to carry the short one on the strong side and have crossdraws made for the two longer barrelled guns.
Am I correct in this thinking?

For the short guns, get a 5 1/2 holster for both and they will work either way. A Mexican Loop for the 7 1/2 can be made with enough area in the loop to wear straight or cant it if you wish unless your over an extremely wide belt. This way you can mix things up.

I've made a bunch for others but personally I never use a crossdraw holster. Since I shoot NCOWS I choose to be period correct and use a straight hang holster and cant it if I wish. Those old pictures you see with holsters in a crossdraw position were not made as a cross draw, they just positioned them like that.

This summer I've been shooting a 5 1/2 and a 7 1/2 and have worn them both ways. I shoot more accurate with the 7 1/2 gun and shoot the crossdraw one first so if there is a particularly harder target on one of them I can switch them around before going to the line.

Cliff has good advice, RS. You will then have the most flexible rig possible. Welcome to The Leather Shop. Looking forward to seeing what you end up with.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I would prefer to shoot NCOWS as well, but there is no nearby club.
Are open holsters with exposed muzzles allowed in SASS?
If so, maybe I could just get two holsters that would fit all of the guns.

When the gun is longer than the holster there is no problem, except cosmetic for some, but a barrel that protrudes from a short holster can cause front sight snags.  The Pietta ' 58 Remingtons front sight can snag so severlye that it might even cause real safety issues?   There is iron in Cliffs words, 5 1/2" holster for the strong side and a 7 1/2" cross draw holster.  The most you will ever be wrong is just 2" of extra holster length and that does not slow you one little bi!

Me? I'm in Bismarck.
Where can I find a list of belt/holster makers here?
I had kinda settled on a Kirkpatrick, but I'm open to custom made.

Rocksalt, I don't think there is a list, we just all hang around the campfire here.

Regarding the open toe, there are no rules against it but historically even though some existed they were not as common during the 19th century as you see today. Most would have been sewn through the toe or would have had a toe plug sewn in.

I would recommend a 7 1/2 holster before a 5 1/2 with the gun hanging through for the reasons Slowhand Bob mentioned.

Right, I didn't think about the front sight hanging up.
But that's why I posted before I ordered.
