What do ya'll consider the best out of the box SXS hammerless shotgun?
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

An SKB from Dirt Merchant, or any of the fine gunsmiths.

Depends on what you mean by "out of the box?"  They don't make SKB's anymore.  They don't make Browning BSS's anymore.  They don't even import the Baikal anymore.  It looks like they quit importing the TTN.  That only leaves a few el cheapo Chinese side by sides and the Stoeger in the lower price brackets.  You can get these for under $350.00.  Then the price takes a huge leap when you move to the CZ's, Pioneer, and Huglu at the $1,000.00+ range.  Then they take a quantum leap into the mega thousands as most of the rest of the doubles are custom built.  None of them regardless of cost is good "out of the box" if you are taking about SASS competition.  They all need to be tuned for competition.  For the price, the basic Stoeger coach gun can be made to run very well.  If you have the money then look for a used SKB or BSS.

Pettifogger you're right of course. Everytime they come out with a good SXS they quit making them or they no longer import them. The Baikal was great for the money, also the Charles Daly 306 single trigger, that's what we currently shoot, but then Charles Daly went under. I think my next set will be the CZ (Huglu) Ringneck, also a single trigger, the Bobwhite is the same gun with double triggers. Ringneck runs $835 and the Bobwhite $615, but like you said, "They all need to be tuned for competition". For the cost it probably makes more sense to get an SKB from Dirt Merchant and be done with it.  ;D

Pettifogger ....when did they quit importing the TTN ?

TTN was the original importer and they sold out about two years ago.  Cimmarron took over but at the SASS convention this past weekend neither Cimarron, EMF or Taylors (the three main importers of cowboy style guns) had any and two said they couldn't get them anymore.  Forgot to ask the third if they could get them.  I haven't seen any new ones locally for a while.  Also, IAC the importer for the 1887 lever shotgun is no longer importing those.  Hope someone picks both of them up as it would be nice to have a source for replacement parts.

Indeed.... I bought mine from Walt (TTn) in Nov. 04 I believe ...
I knew he went to EMF and was importing them there .. for a short while 28" barrels were offered
I think Cimarron had some too but sold out.
I'm supprised to learn they have ceast importing them.

Savage Arms was going to come out with a "Stevens 511" sxs next month. As of a couple weeks ago it was mentioned on their web site. It was going to list for $800

I just looked, and it has been removed from the web site.

I was not a US made gun... I wonder if they could not get a quality product from wherever they were going to get it from so they dropped it.

I live in the same town as Savage... I'll ask around and see what I can find out.
