If I get a 45-75 '76,,,it will be used more for hunting than ,,,anything else.  With that in mind,,, is there anyone that has tried blackpowder loads with copper jacketed bullets ? Would it ,,, not make a good formula with jacketed bullets ?

And if not,,what would you consider the 'best' hunting 'lead' bullet to feed thur the 45-75 ?

Thank you

In answer to your question--sort of!  I have tried the Hornady jacketed 350 grain flatnose over 43 grains of 3031 but no BP yet.  I had to recannulure just in front of the existing one so that I could seat at an OAL of 2.25" but other than that they worked as they should.  With BP, now that is another story and until I get the muc to dry out won't be able to find that out yet.  Oh yes, I did slug the rear of the barrel yesterday just to  make sure that it was 0.457 and it was/is 0.457. So those jacketed bullets at 0.458" work.  I had gotten one of those Lee factory crimp dies and used that crimp in my new cannulure so that to make sure that the bullet didn't slip either out or in when in the magazine when one was fired.  Works like it is supposed to.  Don't know if all this malarky will help but here it is for what it is worth. ;)

Like you I'm interested in a 45-75, a NWMP to be exact.  The majority of my shooting will be target and hunting, I dought I'll ever compete with it.

My experiance, while limited, is that a big flat point lead bullet will anchore deer sized game very well, better than a lot of the high velocity stuff out there.  The 45-75 with a good flat point design with a wide metaplat should be able to take just about anything with the posible exception of an angry bear, and even then with good shot placement it should do the job.

I don't know if I'd even mess with jacketed stuff, under smokless or black powder.  The last time I fired jacketed ammo I was ammazed at how much longer it took to clean than lead and at the velocities these rifles are rated for there's no need for jacketed stuff.

I shoot the RCBS 300 gr gas check bullet cast real soft over a full case of Swiss 3f and it anchors these Texas whitetails better than my 45-90 1886 does ;)

I have used jacketed bullets in my Chaparral .45-75 loaded over APP and 777 and gotten excellent accuracy.  It drops deer in their tracks.  But so does the Lyman (Gould) hollowpoint bullet cast at 20:1, loaded over Swiss black powder.  Jacketed bullets over real black powder will foul out very rapidly due to the absence of lube.  But they work fine over the bp subs.

I would stick with lead bullets. They will surprise you how well they do on game. I have not hunted with my 1876, but with my 1881 Marlin 45-70 and 330gr cast bullets at 1500fps. That 45-70 load is for all practicle comparison the same as the 45-75.

I've shot jacketed bullets in my NWMP SRC but there's no need for the expense.  I'm casting the 457191 and 457192 and am happy with these bullets.  They'll do well at these velocities and won't cost more than they should.

The question I ask is why you would want to copper foul a barrel with a jacketed bullet when a proper shaped cast bullet would do as well or more likely even better? ???

Unless you are planning to use a greese cookie under that jacketed slug, I'd go with a cast 350 grain grooved slug lubed with SPG or its equilant.l  If you still have to go with a jacketed bullet then a charge of 40 grains of IMR3031 and a 350 grain JSP would give you a good starting load.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.
