Howdy......
I got 2 'jugs' of the 'stuff' and loaded up 35 rounds of 45 Colt,255gr lead,5.5gr. Today I loaded 100 rounds and decided to go with 5.8gr (the max) I don't think I will feel any differance. This stuff meters good, but not quite as consistant as Winchester 231 (my regular powder) I get a few 'cheerios' on the turn table....not a problem with me. I am gonna try and shoot the stuff tomorrow. Any of ya got any other advise on loadin this stuff. I use a Dillon 550B with their standard powder measure.

Good shootin......

Drifter,

How much 231 were you using?  How does it compare? (FPS, Cleanliness, etc.)

I've been using 231 for quite some time, and have been concerened with the amount of empty space compared to Trail Boss.

Thanks

It's not like it used to be, but it'll do.

It is recommended that you use the rifle powder measure (the large one) for .45 lc. A friend of mine had the same comment and he was using the small measure on his, too. I haven't used much of it to notice, but then I'm loading .357, too. I like the way it shoots, though.

I normally load 6.0 to 6.5 of Win 231. I have been usein it for about 6 years. I ain't shot none of the T.B. yet,I am gonna try for tomorrow. This stuff fills the case about half way  :o I tried to double charge and the case won't hold it (a little clean up required) I gotta get my wife to San Diego Intl. Airport tomorrow at 5:30am. I am gonna try and shoot & test after that.
More to follow...............

Good shootin......

I chronied .45's with 200's matching TB up against my old HP-38 load of 6.0g. It flat kicked the HP's butt. Out of my 5 1/2" NRV, HP=548.5fps, TB=655fps. ES- HP=78.72, TB=50.60. SD-HP=30.75, TB=20.61. This was the 5.5g start load. Out of my Marlin CB, avg. was HP=772.7fps, TB=820.4fps. ES-HP=145.9, TB=53.21. SD-HP=49.73, TB=19.49. This was in Rem. cases, the TB was using a CCI primer, the HP had Federals( was already loaded earlier). I will try a little more to see if the SD drops some more, if not the 5.5g load will work fine. For Dillon's IMR reccommends the rifle bar for charges over 5.0g. I've got an SDB that came with two bars, but I'm not sure which one is in it, won't know until I try to adjust it drop the charge I settle on. Test charges were loaded on a single stage using a Lyman 1200DPS to measure the powder. Crimps were double checked with a LEE Factory Crimp die. I'm also working with 38-40's at the same time. My old load was 4.6g of Amer. Select, which out performed the 4.5g start load of TB, have two more batches made up in 1/10th grain increases to see if it changes the difference between the two powders. As it stands now, I will be changing over to all TB for my loads, but will have to use up existing ammo first..........Buck 8) ::) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Four-Eyed Buck

Set up my SDB to run Trail Boss today. The bar that was in it was the small bar. Found it could be adjusted to drop 5.6g of TB. I also discovered it was brand sensitive for primers. The first stuff I ran on it was already primed, so this was the first time I used the priming system. It doesn't like Federals! Turned them over, sideways, generally gave me fits. I had some Wins., so loaded those up and after that it ran fairly well. Wish I knew some way to get it use the Feds though. Hope to chrony the 5.6g loads to see if they improve on the stats I got for the 5.5 start load........Buck 8) ::) :-\
