ok thanks any idea when it went into service

Only data on date for both is 1865.You have to take into consideration this date was derived at by it's appearance in whatever record the researcher found. This is not necessarily a date it was issued. It could have been found on the list of arms turned in when a unit was disbanded. The 2nd was a long serving unit from start to finish being in service right up to the end of the war in 1865 with the Army of the Potomac. The SRS books only tell you where a certain weapon was at one point in time in it's service life as found by a researcher.Depending on the document the number shows up in it could be when issued, turned in for repair, turned in when a unit was rearmed, sold, etc.

Two Flints

Hello SSS,

Thanks to Herbert, JimBob, for providing the Serial # information.  I had to pack up and leave my hunting camp in Maine for the dreaded drive back to Massachusetts.  Thanks for posting for me.  Just starting to get unpacked.  Because of the growing drug problem in northern Maine there have been an increasing # of camp breakins so I now have to transportate all my weapons back and forth from ME to MA. No small task!

Anyway, I checked the SRS books that I have and the best info is what has already been posted on the serial # info, i.e., Company M, 2nd Ny York Volunteer Cavalry, issued on or before March 1865.

Thanks again guys,

Two Flints
