This is probably a stupid question but I don't want to go to a lot of work in making a transfer pattern and cutting leather until I know.  I'm getting ready to make a holster for the Ruger New Vaquero that I have - 5 1/2" barrel - 357 (I shoot 38 spl).  I have a set of Will Ghormley's "Old West Collection" (West Texas Holster) patterns that in the list of revolvers the patterns work for is the "Ruger Vaquero 5 1/2" barrel".  For some reason, I am thinking that I read somewhere that the "old" Ruger Vaquero was different in size from the "New Vaquero"?  Am I correct in that or am I getting senile?  I know the New Vaquero has the cross bar safety but are they the same frame size/overall size as the older Vaqueros and will this pattern work on a New Vaquero?  I don't have access to one of the older Vaqueros to compare them so I'm hoping someone out there can set me straight on the "Old" versus the "New" sizes and if they are the same and if this pattern will work for the "New Vaquero".  Many thanks.

Just use the Colt SAA pattern, this pattern fits the New Model Vaquero just fine providing you're not going to line the holster, if you're going to line the holster then use the Ruger old model pattern and it will it will fit great, this pattern is just large enough to allow for the thickness of the added lining.

A big thanks to you all for the info - greatly appreciated!  Have a happy holiday!   :)

Ten Wolves is right on. I have my patterns marked Ruger Vaquero or Colt SAA/New Vaquero. In fact I use my shop gun New Vaquero for wet forming the Colt SAA. My colt fits just the same.

My first holster was exactly that. Only, I made it for the old model Ruger...and it came out too big for my new model. Good thing you asked, bedbugbilly!
