Hello all, I just found this site after a lot of searching to find out some info and possible history, value of my Spencer.
It's marked on the barrel as a M1865 made in Boston Mass. #12678. It has a 6 groove barrel that is 20" long and a 9 marked sight. I cannot find any markings on the wood. It appears to be in fine working condition. I am in eastern VA.

If it's not too far, I'd take it up to CSArms in Upperville and have Cliff Sofia have a look at it. Another possibility would be Staley's in Fredricksburg. It's far better to have an expert look at it in person than get a guess from the internet.

Hi Torsion,

This information taken directly from the Marcot book may be of some help to you in trying to determine the history of your M-1865 Spencer.

Your Spencer M-1865 may have been sold locally to the civilian market, and could have been taken by its owner out West if he travelled in that direction.

Canadia also had 2000 unmarked spencer 1865 spencer carbines and at least 1300 1865 spencer rifles for it troops in 1867 ,as well as another 700 spencer rifles ,can not find refrence to modle, this would mack up the balance of the 1865 modles made by the Spencer company an may explain the number of unmarked Spencers that turn up,Problem is the Burncide company also had est 4000 carbines that were not sold to the goverment and there does not seem to be s record of wich company Canadia got there carbines from, but as the Spencer firm was the only one that made the rifles it would be a fair gess that the carbines came from the same source, that would make it very lickly that the unmarked Spencer Co carbines all saw Canadian servis(this is only a gess on my part)
