I have purchased a 10 gauge sxs which should arrive next week.  I will be getting brass shot shells from Rocky Mountain Cartridges in the next day or two and will be getting wads, cushions and cards for reloading.  Now what I need is a little help from my big bore friends on a good load for some serious BOOOOOM, Smoke and Fire.  I was given a load of 95 gns FF and 1 3/8 oz of shot.  Sounds like a good starting point.  Any other suggestions?

You should be able to load as heavy or light as you like.  A good rule of thumb for black powder shotgun is to use an equal volume of powder and shot.  Use a shot dipper or some other measure you can set and dip both shot and powder with it.

I have loaded 10 Ga. loads as low as 1-1/8 oz. shot and equal volume of powder on up to quite heavy loads.  Pattern your gun and see what works best.

By the way, soak a little lube into your fiber wads and you should be good to shoot all day.

Although I've found "square loads" to be safe enough to shoot, they don't always give the most uniform patterns.  Sometimes you will benefit, patternwise, from slightly reducing the volume of powder compared to the volume of shot.

Shoot some paper and count holes.  Soon enough you will learn what yer scattergun likes.

Hey DD,

I was not suggesting he use a "square Load".  My intention was that he start with a square load and work up to what patterns best for his gun.  That is pretty much standard procedure for load development with muzzleloading and black powder cartridge shotguns.  Sorry I did not make myself clear.

The Four iron men dropped promptly with my 10ga SxS.  My Win 87 10ga does near as well.  These are the smoke kings of Cowboy Action guns.  FWIW, my 10ga SxS is very similar to Slim's.  Good flick Slim.

This is the load I used in the video: Winchester 3 1/2" hull, Remington 209 primer, 132 grains Goex FFg, 132 grains 7 1/2 shot, 1/2" fiber wad, 1/8" overpowder card, overshot card, roll crimp. Needless to say, this is for a modern shotgun.
