I have the Stoeger 12 SXS and a Winchester 1897. I prefer the Stoeger at this point. Removed one coil from break open lever spring, polished the chambers with Craytex bit for quick eject of spent shells, polished ejector rod (They are rough from factory) and polished pivots. Works like a charm.

Whew glad to see someone happy . I have had a st. coach gun for 2 years, no problems . Just ordered an Uplander Supreme .
You guys were scaring the heck out of me  :o :o

Granted I'll never win any time trials but have good luck so far. Guess there is good and bad .
Take care

I'm lucky in that regard , have a local gunsmith who takes care of me. What he can't order ,he makes.Which is great for me cause I have trouble changing a light bulb :o :o

I bought a new Stoeger Coach Gun this summer (think it used to be called a Hallway Sweeper before CAS came along ) and had my CAS gunsmith do the following:

Polish the chambers so used shells fall out
Lighten the springs
Slick the action, particularly the hinge and latch
Open the break open angle slightly to give more clearance when loading
Disconnect the automatic safety reset (grind the end off the rod that does that). Safety still works, if i want to use it, but doesn't reset automatically when I cock it... which lightens the force required to open the action.

It will never open as easily as a SXS with external hammers, but it's surprisingly close. I can open it one handed with a little bit of a flip.

Best part? I haven't missed a shotgun target all summer, even from a runaway mine car.  ;D

I've put around 1,500 rounds through my Stoeger Uplander purchased back in 2006 and here's what I've discovered:
1)  The springs weaken after 1K rounds.  I've basically added back the removed 1 1/2 coils with a washer spacer on the release lever spring.
2)  The hammer spring weakened on the right barrel so I ripped it all apart and added a washer spacer to it.  I did both springs.  I'm still not quite sure how I was able to put it back together b/c of the extra spring tension.  The assembly was not a pleasant experience.
3)  As I posted here awhile ago, the Stoeger kicks but that problem was solved.
4)  I like the gun.  Just don't be suprised if you start getting light firing pin strikes or the action starts to break open after the first trigger is pulled - that's fixed by performing #2 & #1 above respectivly.
5)  When I had the gun ripped apart, I switched the triggers L to R.  For me, it seems to make little difference and if you have shorter fingers I'd say don't consider it.
6)  I have never had anything break on it.
7)  I have the 26" barrels w/ removable choke tubes so I hunt/skeet/trap with it.

Just some feedback for the OP.

General Burleson

I have used a stoeger coach gun since I started shooting Cowboy Action almost five years ago. Had full slick up and spring cuts and have had zero problems. I had a chance to buy another used one several months ago with the nickle finish. Both work great. Now since I own a 97 - I have two back-ups or guest shotguns. Can't have too many.
