Does anyone know the original bullet diameter for the Winchester model 1876? The serial number on mine is in the 17000 range and was shipped to the factory in 1881. The bore is in perfect condition... maybe a littel wear but no pittiing.

I only own an Uberti copy personally, but in his book "Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West", Mike Venturino says he has slugged many original 45 caliber '76s in both 45-60 and 45-75 and they all measure exactly .457.  In his opinion, this is the reason for the '76 in 45 caliber's reputation for good accuracy, and he thinks that for some reason Winchester held this model to tighter tolerances than others.  Probably because it was their premier rifle at the time.

Hope this helps.

will it be ok to shoot a .459 Saeco 015 if the bore is .457? I am talking to mtbaldybullets and they are saying the saeco 015 is what i need if the bore is in good shape.  Let me know what ya'll think.

The diameter should be fine.  Same book lists proper cast bullet diameter as .457 to .459.  The big thing to be aware of is where the crimping groove is, as the toggle link Winchesters are so touchy about overall cartridge length (which is 2.25")  when it comes to feeding.

I envy you having an original to shoot!

Since you are loading for an original, you may find that .459 will be too large to chamber.  I use shortened 45-70 brass, and it is pretty thick stuff, so some of the new made to order 45-60 brass my be a different story. :)
