Howdy,

I've been looking to get a derringer for side matches and wondered if one with a trigger guard is legal for SASS.  I really like the Bond Arms derringers.  The " Cowboy Defender" has no trigger guard and is a copy of the 1860 Rem. style.  The "Texas Defender" has a removable guard. The other styles, like the "Snake Slayer" and "Snake Slayer IV ", "Century 2000" the trigger guard can't be removed.  My gunstore won't sell any without the trigger guard , but he does have the "Texas Defender".
What calibers are used in side matches?  I like the .45 C / .410 myself  ;D  It looks potent!  Probably a little over kill for side matches though.

thanks for any help in this matter.

The Bond is a great little derringer.  Get the one with the removable trigger guard because it's much easier to get it in your hamd and get going with it without one.  Derringer matches are usually two shot speed matches.  The bonds have change out barrels.  I replaced mine in 2 minutes.  I would start with the .38 and you will probably not ever buy another one but you will have that option.

I have the .38 barrel and the .410/.45  I have never shot a .410 shell in mine.  The .45, even loaded light is stout load in the small gun.  Go ahead and buy a competition spring when you buy the gun.  The factory one is heavy as all get out.

Yep, Cammie's right!  I got one for my birthday and I absolutely love it!  I shot a pards with the 410 - WOW!   :o  Couldn't do that very often, but it was fun!  I do the 38s and we got the 32s also.  I figured the 45 would be a lot like the 410 - LOTS of bullet for that little gun.  It's a very sturdy pistol - so far, the best I've seen and shot.  You won't go wrong with the Bond!

:o  I have the utmost respect for the Ladies...especially ones with guns!

I did't get an answer about the trigger guard issue.  Also I would like to know what is the best way to carry a derringer.  What kind of holster.  Do you have to draw the derringer on the clock or is it staged?  I havent seen any derringer side matches yet.

oops...Just reread your response Miss Camille and see you recomended getting the one with the removable trigger guard.  So that is what I'm gonna do.   ;D

Just wondered if I had one with a trigger guard already if I could shoot it in a side match SASS legal.

Camille Eonich

Yes the trigger guard is SASS legal. :)

WOW Trina, very impressive!  ;D  There is a lot of talent in here...any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

how does one holster his/her derringer for speed matches? ( quickly isnt the answer Im looking for either :P )  shoulder rig? a lil holster on your belt?  ( I dont even have my derringer yet and Im worried about leather already!)  :D

Tricky Trina

Side matches don't usually require holsters.  Just carry it, open and unloaded to the table. Usually you retrieve the gun from the table or start with it in your hands.  Just slip hammer.... it's not hard and I have a lot of fun with it.

Like my hubby said, I owe it all to Twin - he's the best!  I should give all those awards to him because he is a wonderful coach and even has let me use his derringer, pocket pistol and ammo to win those awards.  We all call him a gamer, but you'll never meet a nicer person than him and his wife, Last Word.

Which model and caliber are you shooting?
I own both a .38 Cobra and a .22 LR Davis.
For plinking I prefer the .22 (I use CB Caps), but for CAS targets and self defense I prefer the .38 Special. I have shot the .38 with a variety of factory and Handloads and it handles all with full satisfaction.
My buddy has also developed a Squib load for the .38 for pratice, it closely approximates a low velocity CAS load and fires with greatly reduced recoil. I like to think of it as a 124grain bullet .38Special CB Cap!

I used to have a 4" bbl American Arms .45/.410.
Good to have in a pocket in snake country.

The top bbl with silvertip, bottom with 255 RN would group both barrels into a coffee can at 25 yards.

Be extremely careful loading these Remington style guns.
When you swing the barrels closed if the firing pin is in the down position you can easily blow your hand off or worse.
That made me uneasy enough to eventually trade mine off.
