Just returned from a working trip to areas just south of Pocatello, Idaho. As I look out on the hills and mountains, I can envision riding a horse through those magnificent mountains. One fellow I know who works for the Forest Service actually goes into the wildlands on horseback to sample soils and waters. Now THAT'S a job!

Of course, if I am out there, then usually there is some sort of mine in the area:

Hiked up and down those mine pits and trenches all day.

I was going to wear my cowboy hat - great in the sun, but I feel a little pretentious as a suburb dweller making like the cowboy that I am not, particularly in cowboy (and potato) country.

Sometimes I wish I could have seen these areas back in the 1860s or so.

Gunslick Rick,

I am an environmental engineer specializing in treatment, cleanup and reclamation of mine sites. My main position is as professor of engineering at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. Actually, someone from CSM saw me living under a bridge, pushing my clothes and aluminum cans in a shopping cart in Denver and decided to give me an opportunity. ;D

So, mine remediation for abandoned or active mines forces me to go where the problems are. My training directs me to problem solving and fixin' 'em. When I ride my dual-sport motorcycle around the mountain passes taking photos of 19th century mining sites, I tell my wife I am working ;) ;D. Yup, I'm out there on some 11,000 ft mountain pass...working.

I'd be happy to hang with, young feller.

I grew up in Logan, Utah, about a hundred miles south of there.  I have been all over that country in my time.  It's good to see those pictures and remember when...

Thanks.
People like me are the reason people like you have the right to bitch about people like me.

I flew out of Salt Lake City to Pocatello. You don't see very much change in the features of the land from north of SLC to Pocatello. It's beautiful country with some of the friendliest, most helpful people around. Then again, I just love those central and northern Rockies regardless of the State.

A front page story in the Denver Post is on an 85 year old cowgirl in Colorado who still lives on her ranch without electricity, mending fences, herding cattle on horseback, and living just as she had during the past 85 years. She is one, tough rancher.

A MINE HUGGER?????? :D

I hug every mine I go to! :o ;D I'd hug the miners as well, but they won't let me. ;DI would have hugged the walls of a South African mine at 11,400 ft below the surface, but the wall was 140-150 degrees. :o

I'm often brought in by the mining companies to offer suggestions and solutions that minimize cleanup costs and permit them to continue operations in the current regulatory climate, whether in the USA or any other place they have issues. For many international mines, the World Bank put in 5-10% toward development of the operation, so the mines have to follow World Bank rules. I assist them to operate while meeting the regs in a cost effective fashion so they won't have to shut down. We've developed some mine water treatment technologies that cost 1/100 of conventional technologies.
