A thought on more homemade leather dye.

Several years ago, I read an article about making wood stain from ammonia and chewing tobacco. I tried it and it came out a brilliant red. Just wondered if anyone had tried it with leather substituing the ammonia with vinegar and alcohol.

It's the first I've heard about it. I suppose one could boil up a couple plugs of Days O' Work and see how it goes. It might produce some interesting results.

Well, didn't work quite as well as hoped. Even after two weeks, at best it comes out like a wash more than a dye, trying another experiment, though, threw in a ball of steel wool and plan to let it sit for a while and see what happens...will update.

Just curious but what type of tobacco did you use?

FWIW - I've tried various mixes with tobacco and while the ammonia/tobacco works good on wood none of the mixes I've tried over the last 40 years with tobacco have done much.............

From what I have seen so far, about all it would be good for is maybe a tint or wash. Oh, well, back to the drawing board, lol!
