Crime happens in good areas too. There is no place you can go where a criminal can't go also. You insinuate that you had battle experence but your attitude comes off as "nobody should ever need a gun to defend themselves". I would have to say that you learned little from being in 6 battle zones or you would understand that you don't have to go anyplace in particular to find trouble and sometimes your "awareness" won't pick up on it until it's too late.
Don't worry about it too much, for in able to have been in six war zones the individual would have had to have been in the military for minimum 1975 to 2003. Not impossible, but, to have participate in Viet Nam, Urgent Fury, (Grenada), Just Cause, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and The Global War on Terrorism, (Afghanistan), is a pretty far stretch. Some of these campaighns were reserved for specific units.
Having 28 years military experience, I am quite convinced that the individual in question, didn't go all that many places and do all that much stuff, so probably didn't learn squat.

I believe you're correct. I would like to know if this individual did spend time in any battle zone what did the military give him to protect himself?

A wallet?
Car Keys?
Cell Phone?
ATM card?
A situational awareness?

Regardless of your keen situational awareness you would need to be able to defend yourself in any battle zone. The urban jungle is a battle zone that you will need to have a means of defence. And all the situational awareness in the world won't do you squat if you don't have a way to protect yourself.
Ride Safe and Shoot Straight.
Rick.
