reloading recipes needed for a remington NMA with .45 cartridge conversion (R&D)

what .45LC cartridge loads you guys have cooked up that work well?  I've seen the 3 listed on the SCORRS site and would like some more.  Especially using 777 or other substitutes.

Currently i'm using 250gr smokeless winchester cowboy ammo, but would like to use a BP substitute (i'll be shooting it in a yellowboy as well so i'm not too keen on brass corrosion or massive fouling)

Whiptail, there are no secrets ... just go to the various alternative BP vendor's sites and read the loading data for Cowboy Loads ... 45 Colt.  Then pick one and try it out at the range.  There is no magic recipe 

You can collect a whole recipe book of loads but you ultimately have to try one particular to your handgun's make and barrel length ...

If your anything like me, or the rest of us, you want easy.  I found that with my Uberti copy of the 1858 that a light .45 bullet of 200 grains or less will give me a closer POI to my POA.  I have tried the 200 grain bullets and they shoot high.  the 185 grain bullets shoot a little lower but they are still above point of aim.  The 165 grain bullets are almost on the money and I imagine that the .452 or .454 roundball will be right on the money.

My charge for this is enough BP/777/Pyrodex to allow a wonder wad and the bullet to fit in the case with the nose of the bullet above the case mouth, and crimped accordingly.

This works well for me.  For those who do not like the recoil of the full charge of BP/777/Pyrodex, trim your cases back to .45 S&W length and you'll be happy.

Bushwack is right on the money, I tried a 165 gr. bullet with a wonder wad over about 26 to 27 gr. of 777 FFg it shot well and felt pretty good recoil wise.

interesting!  I assumed that a heavier bullet was needed to bring down the POI.

So 165 or so is a good one to try-- cool, i imagine its easier on the gun too.

Anyone have any experiences firing that cartridge out of a lever action (mine is an uberti '66)?  I'd like to have the same cartridge work in both revolver and rifle...

In any case, thanks for the advice -- thats just the kind of thing i was looking for.

I've also found the 165 gr bullets most accurate. 205's are close, but I like the 165's. Both the 205's and the 165's are moly-coated Bear Creek bullets with 5.5 gr of TiteGroup powder behind them. The gun was right on with the 8" bbl. When cut to 6", it stayed just as accurate. I haven't tried one of those shiny new 5 1/2's yet, but will do so soon. I also have one getting sleeved for a .38 cylinder, too. Then, of course, I have to try Trail Boss powder in all of 'em. Ooooh, the fun yet to come.
