It's a reverse image.  It's actually the right side of the gun, not the left.

  Correct, it is a reverse negative.

Great Job all, I noticed the leadin slots were backwards some time ago, but today he hit that the whole gun was wrong.

To answer your question, historians are rarely shooters.  It took a shooter to know which side of a 73 is which!

Another case, recently I was watching a TV program about some excavations at the Jamestown Colony.  They were showing some of the artifacts that had been recovered.  The professor showed a small brass device, and said it was a personal hygene implement, the sharp end was to pick your teeth with, and the round end was to clean the wax out of your ears with.

But any muzzle-loader shooter would have known that the object was actually the serpent side plate off of a Queen Anne flintlock pistol!
