Randell & Co. Stiching Horse

    Found an excellent stiching horse in an antique shop today. It's marked with a trangle and inside of that is "Randall & Co" and some faded other letters.

   Would any of y'all happen to know anything about this Co.? nothing about it on the web as far as antique leather tools etc. goes.

   If you might have any information on this Co. it would be appreciated.

Though I am sure there have been many Randalls, shux one of my grannys was one, but there was one big making outfit by that name.  Not sure if I ever saw a stitch horse they made but have seen many of their small leather machines.  Some of their old stuff passes through Ebay at times.

About 30 years ago, I bought a Randall stitching horse in an old tack shop/feed and grain, here in Montana.  The horse was in near new condition but made in the late 1880's or early 1890's.  Randall has been in business since 1858 and they were then and still are today, one of the largest suppliers of leather machinery, parts and tools in the U.S.  The company name is now Campbell/Randall.  Stitching horses were made in two different styles.  One with straight in-line jaws and one with jaws that were set and turned a little to the left.  The straight jaw was designed for harness makers and the off-set jaw as made for saddle makers.  My horse has the off-set or twisted jaw.  Hope this will help.

That's a nice one. I saw two older models at a leather trade show a couple of years ago, at $450.00 each. Neither one was as nice as yours. I agree, good find

    $450.00! The antique store I got this one from sold it for $170.00 and I talked them down even more than that.

     Must be a better find than I thought.

I'm just getting started though. If all goes well I'll be building 2 pole barns * 50 X 70 that has two lean two's. These will all be mortised and tenoned together just like the old days. Different locations though.I'm so excited I can hardly sleep at night.
OOOPS! Buffalo Barbie told me just informed as soon as she gets new furniture built.

They were priced high iin my opinion, but it was a leather show, and these were defintely working benches. As far as I know they did not sell.

   Duke I'd say with that set up of yours, knocking out ten stitching mules would be a piece of cake, you're all set up to have a lot of fun, my shop is my second home, and I enjoy the be jabbers out of it, I'll wager you're the same
