I am getting close finishin all the mods on my 1858 New Model Army Birds Head project. I got one minor issue that I do not know how to fix, or if it can be fixed. This started life as an old un-built CVA Kit. These things were rough! Nothing fits without modification! Anyhow, I've got it together, and got it timed but looking down the bore it appears the barrel bore is slightly higher than the cylinder bore. I am nearly dead on side to side, but up and down it is off by about .030 to .035 I would guess. Any idea what the tolerable tolerance might be in this area? I can't think of an easy fix for this. Anyone ever dealt with this problem? If so how did you fix it.

A pic of the project.

Guess worse case you could give the back of the barrel a  very slight funnel effect.

Have you miked the chambers ? or perhaps see if a different cylinder lines up any better
A forcing cone would relieve some, if a R&D Drop-in were fitted.

amin,

If you are lucky, this problem you are having will be the cylinder that is bored incorrectly. If this is the case, comparing several other cylinders by the same Italian manufacture is your best option. Buy the one that comes closest to aligning with the bore.
If you can't find a cylinder... you may have to bore out each chamber and sleeve each one. Then re bore the chambers to align with the bore of the barrel.

Next option, might be to check to see if the bore of the barrel is centered. Or if the turning and threading of the breech end of the barrel was cut off center. You may have to unscrew the barrel to check these two possibilities out. Good news is that you may have enough of the cut off end of the barrel that can be turned and re threaded to replace the one in the gun.

Worst case, is the hole in the frame for the barrel to screw into was improperly aligned when it was bored and threaded. This is a tough fix!
But might be corrected by boring out the barrel slightly off center to the side that will correct the misalignment. Sleeve the bored out barrel with a section of the barrel you have already cut off.

You have a lot of checking to do before you can decide which option maybe your best choice.
Just an end note; Kit guns "may" have several misalignment issues that would have kept them from being turned into finished firearms.

Well I will check my Uberti cylinder to this. This is an Old CVA kit, so I believe they were imported from Armi San Marco. ( correct me if I am wrong )  If the Uberti cylinder fits and aligns then I think the simplest fix will be to tell the wife I need to buy the Kirst or R&D cartridge conversion cylinder!  ;D

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I got plenty to consider here!

Blair and I have discussed this.... yeah we care that much  ;D

Being a CVA kit .... we highly doubt it's Uberti , However if it's ASM a Uberti cyl might fit it.
It could also be Pietta or Palmetto
It also might be a Spanish made Replica....

There is the possibility that several other Manufactures cylinder "may" align with the bore. (??)
This "may" require a complete re tuning and timing of all the internals of the action. That might be a less expensive alternative to some of my other suggestions. Still it could be a lot of work.

As Major 2 said, this is an interesting project. I would like to see you succeed. I hate coming across with all the "gloom and doom", but, you should know what you maybe up against.

Ken Howell of R&D may be a very good choise to have check out the areas I had suggested in my earlier posting

I have a new Pietta 58 NMA 44, and a 1971 Ubert Revolver Carbine. I pulled the cylinders out of both and tried them in the Birds Head. The Pietta would fit into the frame. ( Unless I was willing to face the end of the cylinder by about .005, which I am not! ) But interestingly enough, the Uberti cylinder dropped in, and I was able to work the action. The cylinder rotated smooth and lined up and locked in time with the bolt. I got out my bore scope and checked the alignment of the barrel to cylinder and man it looks dead on. I need to check my head space but no sense in doing that with such an old cylinder that I don't plan on usin any way. What are the odds that a new Uberti cylinder would drop in this? Not sure I want to drop $100.00 for a new one from VTI without kinda nowin they still make em the same. If you guys think they are the made the same now as they were in 1971 I'll just buy the R&D conversion.

I appreciate you guys takin the time to help me out with this. This project has me pretty stoked. I am really enjoying it. I definitely want to see it finished.
