S&W double action
« on: July 19, 2010, 03:44:44 PM »
I'm hoping someone can tell me the date, the year rather, that Smith & Wesson first came out with a double action revolver and what caliber. I'm thinking 1881 with a .44-40, but I've seen some conflicting dates, some such as 1873.  I got to wondering watching the movie Billy Two Hats, where Gregory Peck's character is using a DA Smith, but the year isn't set in the movie. It's after the buffalo have been pretty well decimated, so I'm figuring the time frame is the 1880's.

In that light, should a serial number be too sensitive to put out online - send me a PM - I have numerous references available.
