I notice a lot of sharp edges on the brass section of my gun. Is it okay to stone that area a bit smoother?

Sure - so long as you're careful, and don't remove much.

These are finished as an assembly to ensure a proper mating of the surfaces -  but a little smoothing is easily accomplished, so long as you don't get carried away.

If they're finished evenly with the steel frame, and polishing'd remove too much brass - then 'burnishing' is better, and you can accomplish that by smoothing any sharp/rough edge with a screwdriver shank.

Good Luck!
