I don't see a loading forum, so i'll post my question here. It's comfortable here and i'm loading BP.

I'm attracted by the fact that they used the 310 100 years ago. I like the old way. (within reason)

I use C&B for revolvers, and i'll use brass hulls for shotgun. So, I only need a loader for the rifle. It's 44-40. Is the 310 practical to do my loading? I'm retired, so there's no rush to go fast. I do want to do a good job though.

Give me your thoughts, and if you don't like the idea and think another loader shoulf be used. Tell me. Keep in mind i'm a poor SOB.

Your going to be $75 poorer.  The orginals will cost you in the range of $100 for a 44-40

The Lyman 310 takes it's own series of dies, but it is the closest to 19th Century equipment that you can get new today.

I have found that the more practical option is the LEE Handloader.  It is compact, hand operated, and uses current common dies and shellholders of any make.  You can use it in front of the Idiotbox, or take it to the range for last minute adjustments.  I also full length resizes, which the Lyman 310 doesn't.  AND it only costs $39.

How hard is it to use a hand tool? I mean I have to hunker down on the press from time to time. I can imagen the energy to use the hand tool.

The LEE Handloader full-length resizes most bottle-neck hunting rounds easily.  It's a snap for pistol & BP rounds.

Like for all presses, don't forget to lube when not using carbide dies.  It is not that slow by using the "batch" method.
