Can anyone tell me if a Ruger Blackhawk can be fitted with a Bisley hammer without overhaulin' the entire six-shooter?

Much obliged! ;)

I don't believe that you will have any hang ups if you just swap the hammer. If you choose to change the grip frames I have heard that there is a slight difference in trigger, but it can be taken care of by using the bisley trigger. This is one thing that I myself have not sat down and actually done (yet) myself so my info is second hand.

Well you can do it easy enough but it's not SASS legal once it's done.

I surely do appreciate the info pards.  I'm gonna have to look into gettin' me a Bisley hammer.  As for not bein' SASS legal, well... I can live with that! ;)

Check out this site. They offer the hammer alone or as they suggest a hammer trigger combo kit.

Jus' the Bisley hammer?   ???
I recollect that ye gotta either mill out some of the backstrap for hammer clearance (or grind off'n the backside of the hammer). ::)
Been a spell since I done one. ::)
But I'll check soon.  I got a pair that I'm convertin' to BH gripframes.

Bigsby, thanks fer' the info there pard.  I think $200 is a bit much for a hammer & trigger set-up.  Dang, add another $250 & ya can git the whole gun, lol.  Think I'll do a bit more checkin' cuz I don't want to alter the frame & I may have to leave it just the way it is! ;)

I don't know if you got any CAS swap meets out there, but we got one up here every year. It's a good chance to get all of us kitchen countertop gunsmiths together with all of the spare parts that we've upgraded and no longer need. You can come across some good stuff. Put the word out to a local club and see if you can't get one set up.

P.S. I with you when considering upgrades compared to price of a whole new gun I usually just get a new gun. Two regular ones in better than one modified one.

Never looked at it that way a' for!  Two regular guns is better than one modified! ;)

As for SASS-legal, it is for mounted, but not for "ground shooters".  I've done this, and there are two approaches you can use.   The first is to enlongate the hammer slot in the grip frame.  As mentioned there's not enough clearance to accomodate the Bisley Hammer.
or,
you can lay the standard hammer on top of the Bisley Hammer and you will readily see that the excess "hump" on the back base of the hammer can be milled away, with no harm to the hammer itself, allowing you to reshape and use the Bisley Hammer without modifying the grip-frame.  This is more work, but gives a better looking outcome.

Have fun!
Hope this helps.

Now, this sounds like an idea I can pull off!  Thanks McCandless! ;)
