When I see flags and crosses, I think of Verdun and what I saw.

We were stationed near Verdun when we were stationed in Toul-Rosieres AFB in France.

Near Verdun (one of the longest and bloodiest battles of WWI), two things strike me as if it was yesterday and not 1959 ...

The first .... it had been raining for over three weeks. A drenched and cold squad sat in their trench, bayonets fixed, ready to 'go over the top'. Suddenly their trench, built along the side of a hill, just gave way and closed up.  The French felt that they could do no more fitting grave foir the squad .... so they left them there.

I remember as a kid of nine or ten, walking along that path, looking at those rusting bayonets and knowing that below each one was a soldier, once tired, cold and hungry, terrified at the thought of climbing out of those trenches ... now beyond worry of mortal things.

To me, that will always be what Memorial Day and Veteran's Day is all about ....

And God bless them everyone
My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...
