Texas Navy

Alot of people don't know that Texas had it's own navy (In fact, it had 2 fighting navies and there is currently a 3rd Texas Navy but it's a historical organization). The story is not well known but it very significantly affected the survival of our Republic. Even though these events happened just prior to the time period we normally focus on, I thought some of you "mongrel historians" might find this interesting and worthy of checking out just because of it's unusual-ness.

Interesting fact: The Texas Navy was the victor in the only battle in history where a sailing ship engaged and defeated a war steamer.

Yep, and while the Army had it's ups and downs the Texas Navy Kicked butt in every engagement. The term 'Horse Marines' came from the capture of supply ships headed to resupply Santa Anna's Army.
