I was looking at a Colt New Service 44.40 revolver with a 4 digital serial # 89XX. It has about a 4 or 4.5 inch barrel and it is double action. What is the approx. date of Manufacture?

Take a look at the 'Colt New Service' thread - it's an early one.

It looks like a 1903/1904 by the Serial #. Thank you Sir.

Also - I did an article on the Colt New Service that was featured in 'The Shootist', as well as in my 'St. George's Notes'.

They're a helluva revolver - strong, beautifully made and with a long history of service.

Unfortunately for me, they're massive, and try though I might - at this stage of the game, I just can't seem to make my fingers grow longer, so I just put a near-new one in .455 Eley on Gunbroker.

I'm gonna try and buy if I can this week. I have fairly big hands and long fingers. I have carried and shot N Frame Smith Revolvers in the 70s as a Cop.

I wish you luck.

I've carried N-Frames and have enjoyed them - using the standard 'Magna' grip and a Tyler T-Grip grip adaptor.

I routinely shoot a couple of Model 1917 S&Ws in .45 ACP.

The New Service is 'bigger'...

Good Luck!
