Howdy guys, a quick question. For "Spagetti Western" type holsters with a buckle strap, is there an usual & customary weight of leather if you were going with a 3/4 inch wide strap, which makes me think of a second question. Is there a standard for strap width?

What I'm really asking is what do those of you who make these kind of holsters (Like WC's recent outstanding black one) use for straps?

Thank you! JD

The black dbl shoulder was 7/8. The strap was 5/8.

I appreciate that info WC. So it sounds as if you used the same leather for the strap that you used for the holster; is that something you commonly do? I'm working on a holster now, using a 7/8 strap 3/4 inch wide. The leather seems to me to be a little heavy for the buckle, but then I have ZERO experience making this kind of holster.

I guess I'll keep on and see how it goes. Thanks again, JD

That may be a little heavy.

I'm glad to hear that WC, because it seems heavy to me as well. Thanks

+1 for what Outrider said ,I had to do that on the last pair of spur straps I made with buckles. It worked out pretty good but I think I will downsize the leather on the next ones.

I know I will have to do that outrider. I was hoping to find out if there was a consensus on strap leather weight and width among the guys who built those sorts of holsters. Thanks for responding, and that goes for you too GB!
