I still don't understand why Christy would not try to escape. He had several chances to just walk away.

Will, it appears to be 'half-cocked'...which seems to be very common in period photographs. 

I guess the safety teaching of 'Don't put your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot' wasn't common teaching at the time.... :o
