Tintype of Civil War era Gambler ? Outlaw? Soldier?

This is a very cool, very interesting image of what could be an Outlaw, a Gambler or non-uniformed Civil War soldier, but whatever he is, he is formidable looking. He is seated next to a table with a book laying on it, and what I believe is a Smith and Wesson revolver the type many Officers bought as their preferred revolver during the Civil War.... also the preferred gun of Gamblers. The tintype has some dents but they don't affect the image.

The grip looks sorta like a Remington and the guys looks a little too well dressed to be a soldier.

Truth be told, most likely a guy who put on his best duds, went to get his picture took, and photographer handed him a pistol as a prop.  Probably the book keeper down at the local bank.

Sorry to ruin your fun, but without more facts my theroy is as good as any. ;)

The pistol could be a prop, because of what seems like a missing holster. However, if that is the full barrel on the pistol, it's a very long barrel. Hardly a contraption a gambler would use...

I don't think the individual pictured is a bank clerk... He looks more like a railroad executive, or a prosperous business man of some kind.

Again Steve, a very interesting picture to stimulate our thoughts...

Well my comment was sort of tongue in cheek, but also as likely as any of the other ideas as to what he was.  Now I need inlightened, what would be the main differeances between a bank clerk dressed up for a posed photo and a RR exc?

I have to agree with you fellas ...he could be just about anybody. I really hate it when so
little information is available on the individuals in the photos. I posted the description that was
with the picture, but sometimes I think it is better to post nothing at all than some of the dribble
that accompanies some of these photos.

Don't stop posting it.  Most of us know it's someone trying to sell the picture, but they are interesting.

Delmonico (who puts the coffee pot bail next to the fire, where it can get burned  :o ;D ) is right. Steves picures do set us to guessing and discussing the pictures.

I have drank enough of Del's camp coffee to tell you that it's never burnt. It's always good.
