I'm thinking about buying a 1885 low wall .30-30 to use at "cowboy" single shot long range events.  This would be used where a buffalo rifle isn't required. I'm thinking a flatter trajectory, much less recoil than my .45-70s, cheaper bullets, etc. would be a good thing.  I'm also thinking about putting a Lyman #2 sight on this rifle. I've never used one of these sights before. All the tang sights I have are of the soule variety.

So - any thoughts on the rifle?

Any thoughts on the Lyman #2 tang sight for ranges up to 300 yards with this rifle?

Yo Tangle Eye,

Have a look here for what I think of the Lyman #2: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=3173.0

As for yor choice of 30-30, nix if ya plan on burnin' BP in it.  A better choice of caliber would be 38-55!

Well after some careful consideration over a beef burrito I decided to go with a soule type tang sight.  I just don't think the #2 is of a quality for what this rifle is capabile of. And - not to worry Greysun - this one will be used for heathen smokeless powder since that's what this cartridge was diesigned for in the first place.

I have two of them mounted on rifle caliber repeaters for Cowboy Action side matches; one on an original M'86 Winchester in 45-70 and the other on an original, rebarreled Large Frame Colt Lightning in 45-70 (45-85-285).  The one on the Colt is the Marlin sight with an adapter base.  They have both served me very well for a couple of years now and I have no complaints with them.  As for not having windage adjusment, after all, they are not being used for Metallic Silhouette competition.  Once they are sighted in and the windage is set with either the front sight and/or shimming the rear sight there are really no other adjustments necessary, other than elevation, for the ranges involved in these side matches.  I have painted index marks on them so that I can adjust them in 1/4 turn increments for ranges longer than my sight in range (100 yards in my case).  I hope that this evaluation helps in your selection.
