An original uncased sixth plate [2 1/4 x 3 1/4] outdoor tintype photograph of what appears to be a cavalryman in winter dress posing with his horse, taken during the Civil War or Indian Wars period, possibly on the Plains. Enclosed in brass frame, no glass or case, very good condition. An unusual outdoor tintype, came from an old New Hampshire collection. Guaranteed original......

The saddle has a horn and a fairly high cantel, is it a Hope?  Also the horse has a ring snaffle bit in his mouth and blinders on the headstall.  This does not look particularly military to me.  What say y'all.  It is a great picture, but I don't think it is a soldier.

That's a damned big horse. No clue as to who or what the guy was?
Yes, I do have more facial hair now.

I don't think that is a picture of a military subject... The head gear on the horse definetly isn't from the military from any period that I know of.

That is a tall horse. look at the size of the fellow, and look how far the stirrups are from the ground...

With the blinders and all, a very interesting picture.

the saddle has more of what some call a Australian saddle appearance (one might reference Plantation saddles)   the headstall may have been military if it was hooked to a casson or wagon.  I think what this picture shows you is a man using what he had on hand. Like carrying an 1860 army, when a 1911 is widley available

Even though the man is bundled up, the saddle and blinders and the general stoutness of the legs make me think the horse could be a Steeplechase candidate. ;D
