Coyote Cap submitted a message a few years back with information on Chinese 1897 shotgun serial numbers. If he's still active here, perhaps he can enlighten me about mine.

My quandry? My 1897 Trench Gun serial number doesn't fit any of the series he lists. On the forward right side of the receiver where the barrel attaches is "Mil. 19xx". That's the only serial number I can find. On the right side of the barrel near the receiver is engraved "IAC BILLERICA MA". On the left side is "NORINCO 97".

The forward right receiver is stamped "US" and has a flaming bomb under that. On the receiver underside in front of the loading slot is stamped "MADE IN CHINA". The forened is grooved walnut and the stock is also walnut with the flat end pistol grip.

I bought the shotgun new and I know it's an early one. While I've heard horror stories about the early 1897 Norinco shotguns, this one has functioned perfectly. I'm just curious about the serial number.  ???
