Howdy Gents. I've not seen anything on this line that I can remember, so here goes. Can anyone recommend a good source or sources for carving ideas specific to holsters? I'm thinking patterns of flowers and vines that can be traced and transfered to leather.

I've got the Al Stohlman book on Holster making, and there are a few ideas there, but I'm wondering if there are other good sources. I'm very willing to buy a book if there is one available, or purchase them from other people with more talent than I have for drawing.

I also have the Stohlman portfolio book on flowers come to think of it, and his belt making book.

Thanks very much, and have a SAFE New Year's, JD

Feathers, that link doesn't seem to work, JD, I sometime use the different Tandy Craft Aids that have flower and stem drwgs.  Or trace them from books.

JD, I have some patterns my mentor Sandy Morrissey sent me for both holsters and sheaths.I would be happy to copy and send them to you.Dave ;D

Gun Butcher

JD, you might do what I do and use bits and pieces of different patterns that you like to make your own.  You can just trace the parts you like and come up with a whole new pattern.

Ken Griffin's Scrap Book is a great one... I thought I could find it for you but no luck...maybe I'm spelling it wrong. I have seen it for sale on feebay.

My mom gave me an old copy from the 50's (?)  and it has some great info in it.. Has a few damaged pages from where my brother and I used it as kids. :D

I learned to tool (Well kinda, if you call it that ;D) from reading this book. It has several patterns and projects, including some holster patterns. The style is all his own as I have not seen many that look just like  the way he tools.

I'll keep searching and see what I can dig up.

Well thank you one and all. I've not done a lot to begin with, but I have made up a few designs the way it was mentioned, picking up a design here or there. I was hopeful that there was some cool source all you cool guys new about, so I was trying to get into the "cool club"!

The eleathersupply works, you just have to drop the e in the address. I have everything they sell.

I forgot to mention I've also got every one of Will G's pattern sets.

Freedom, I'll check out the name Ken Griffin and see what I can find, thanks for the tip

Dave, andything you would like to share I would be more than happy to receive, and in the process, see if you can download some of your talent for me! I would be happy to pay for the patterns.

Thanks again everyone 8)

Hide Crafters used to carry a couple of booklets and videos that dealt specifically with designing your own custom floral patterns (Sheridan).  There were enough individual elements in the drawings that one could probably use a cut and paste type method of tracing onto the plastic film to carry out most designs and if you can do a bit of resizing on the computer all the better for custom fitting.

JD Alan

Dave, I received those drawings, and I appreciate you taking time to send them to me.

Freedom, thanks very much for this info, I'll check in out right away.

Slowhand Bob, Thanks for that info. hen I was taking Chan Geer's class he had a book of Sheridan carving thet one could adapt with some work. The book was the same price as some of the discounted tools. so I chose to spend the money on tools.

Thanks everyone, JD

Tandy generally carries a book on Sheridan Carving -

It's either 'The Sheridan Style' by Clint Fay or 'Sheridan Carving Style' by Bill Gardner and Clint Fay. I'm not sure which one. They show examples of very classy work.

JD Alan

Thanks Skeeter, I'll check it out.

JD, the book you saw was probably it LEARN SHERIDAN STYLE TOOLING by Chan Geer.  I think the floral that is my favorite is what I see a lot of the western carvers refer to as the wild flower.  I really like the flowing scroll type lines and the way the flowers flow into them.  Well the wife has me running again today so I gots to get ready.  Have a great day guys.

Howdy Skeeter, guess who is the proud owner of a Ken Griffins Scrap Book! I wasn't sure when another would come my way, so I thought what the heck!

I've checked out that Sheridan carving book. It has a lot of good instructions, but not much in the way of patterns that I feel I could use. I appreciate your effort!
