Howdy:

Ran across a good site that may be useful to some (particularly the front stuffers):

http://vbwhiz.isa-geek.net/plans/

Has great detailed plans for shooting accessories:

Black Powder Pistol Loading & Display Stand
Black Powder Pistol Loading Stand
Black Powder Rifle Shooting Stand
British Ammo Box
Knockdown Shooting Bench
Range Cart

Cool stuff!

I especially like the "BP Pistol Loading and Display Stand."

... And the Shaker quilt rack, too.

As you say, good stuff and practical and seemingly simple construction.

Why is it called a "British" Ammo box ???

Scottish, possibly,,,looks like you can't get many rounds in your hand and still extract it ;D

"British" is a generic term for a group of islands off the northwest coast of continental Europe that include Great Britain, Northern Ireland and over six-thousand smaller islands, and at one time Scotland and any other place the English flag
flew over (i.e. the "Bristish Empire")

Mr. Sullivan, thanks for the geography lesson, I hadn't realised that having lived in Britain for 63 years, just where we were situated!!
Born in Scotland makes me 1st generation I believe, so I can poke fun at 'us' if I wish, yeah?

My main point is, why the label 'British' ? Did the British Army use a box of this construction, or similar, at one time?
The only thing I can think of, is the cartridge boxes in the film 'Zulu', and they were just ordinary wooden crates.

While I cann't find a definitive source as to whether this was a standard ammo box for the "British" army,
the reenactor's group - 65th (2nd Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment of Foot in New Zealand seem
to have an extensive list of sources for there equipment

http://hicketypip.tripod.com/links.htm#References

According to them: "The British Army 560-cartridge small arms ammunition box of the period was a wooden box with a sliding lid section on the top. It was held together by brass self-tapping screws and glued. My sources quote that "those for tropical countries are made of teak, with mahogany ends", which begs the question, what about non-tropical? I have made mine tropical. They were unpainted and a paper label (included in plans) was glued, using shellac, to the box. The lid is secured by a brass countersunk 2" screw, the head of which is covered by a wax seal. The handles were rope loops at each end, with the ends spliced together to form handgrips."

They have a link to the web site listed at the beginnig of this topic.
