Apparently he didn't. Hate to rag on the guy but some things are just not backyard projects.

Just last week, on a different message board, I was chastized and pooh-poohed for saying that anyone who tried to make their own black powder was a fool.
Some strongly agreed with me and others said they'd been making their own black powder for years without a problem. What prompted them was the price of black powder, at $20 a pound.
Apparently, they value their life, skin, eyes and hands cheaply.
I stand behind my contention: there is no need to make your own black powder, or to tinker with it.
The report posted in this thread is tragic, but the incident was very likely avoidable. Granted, the victim wasn't making black powder, but was likely either mixing or milling it to a smaller particle size. Whatever occurred, it clearly points out that black powder should not be taken lightly.
Read, "Gunpowder -- Alchemy, Bombards & Pyrotechnics: The History of the Explosive That Changed the World," By Jack Kelly. Even today, with all the modern equipment, scientists are still puzzled at some of the things that black powder does.
And even today, with all the modern manufacturing technology, plants that make or use black powder still inexplicably blow up.
My sympathies to the family, but perhaps this incident will have a positive side, and make some folks reconsider.
