Hey Pards,  I got me a Smart Question (cuz there's no such thing as a Dumb Question.) This is where you're suppose to agree with me. :)  I took my Cimarron 1873 rifle apart & I can't remember if the firing pin spring, if that sets in past the recess of the breech block.  It looks like the relief that is in the block is for the firing pin to only go in so far. If it matters caliber is 45C.  Thanks for the help.  Regards  MW SASS 62725

MW,
The firing pin spring goes over the firing pin and then the whole works goes into the breech block. When assembling the works there will be tension on the firing pin spring. For a schematic see:   http://marauder.homestead.com/files/73Carbine.htm

Thanks Deadeye Dick, Sounds easy enough. I did order a firing pin spring from VTI so as soon as I get the order I'll reassemble.  Thanks for the link to marauder.

The spring goes on the front of the firing pin and is designed to push the firing pin rearwards when you lever it.  This retracts the firing pin out of the primer pocket.  If you put the spring in behind the pin and could manage to get the firing pin extension installed the firing pin tip would be sticking out of the front of the bolt and you would get out of battery slam fires.  VERY DANGEROUS!
