Okay, pards, this isn't western. A good pal of mine has got two marks on her suede coat. One is ball-point pen, the other is olive oil. Has anyone any advice for her?

FEATHERS

Try rubbing alcohol on the stain first, then use a white eraser, making sure to clean any ink from the eraser as you go.

FEATHERS

Sorry, for the oil stain get some corn flour mix with water to a paste, rub on stain, let it totally dry, then brush off with a stiff brush

Skeeter Lewis

Thanks Feathers. Is rubbing alcohol the same as isopropyl alcohol?

FEATHERS

not too sure drugist should be able to help

Skeeter, it's the same thing. Who knows what they call stuff "Down Under"! You got to keep an eye on that Feathers character :o

I know it's not a popular position to take, but I'm not a fan of alcohol. I often have to deal with the fallout in families when people are irresponsible. Sorry for throwing a wet blanket on the conversation. I guess I would say all things in moderation

heres an old time trick for suede leather and an oil stain. Use corn meal. Take the meal and using a generous amount rub it vigorously into the stan then brush it off with a stiff brush. it should absorb the oil. it may take several applications.
You can use the same method to clean a felt hat. Be sure and brush with the grain which on most hats is in a counter clock wise direction.

Thanks Don. If there's more advice on the ball-point pen, that would be cool.

As a chemist, depending on your ink, the alcohol will work somewhat.  Big CAVEAT, it can also spread the stain.  My advice is find a piece of suede and experiment first.  What may look like a swipe of pen could turn into a dark blob quickly.   I would use a quality swab and use the alcohol sparingly and slowly.

You want to use a white eraser or a art eraser. if you can find a suede brush,Its made with fine brass bristles and use the eraser and brush alternately and if there is not much ink along with the corn meal it should come out.
give it a try. in lieu of the brass suede brush a good clean stiff brush will work.
But it must be clean.
That is the purpose of the brass brisltes oil and dirt doesnt soak into them and transfer to the suede.

Pards, thanks for the great advice. Much appreciated. Skeet
