I have an antique, and very shot out, Winny '92 carbine I'd like to get back into action, but can't find a barrel. I was going to sleeve it, but there isn't nearly enough beef in the barrel out at the muzzle to bore for a Brownells sleeve. 1892 barrels seem to be gone with a Mojave rain. Does anyone know where to get a 44-40 or 38-40 carbine barrel? Can a 44Mag '94 barrel be made to work? I have a 44-40 chamber reamer and Gun Parts lists the '94 barrels as in stock.

Thanks!

you can put a liner in that carbine barrel, it just takes a little more work. The liner has to be turned down for about 8" and the barrel has to be machined with the same step.
The 44 mag 94 barrel will screw into the action and should line up. I have not looked at the chamber prints to see what will happen when you run the 44-40 reamer into it.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll start with the '94 barrel. Cost isn't much more than a Brownells sleeve, and my machine shop is a bit primitive to attempt a stepped liner (as in drill press with index table, antique, but tight, Atlas lathe and lots of hand tools).

Looks like it will be easy to run a 44-40 reamer in the 44Mag chamber. The neck will be about .006" loose, but the 44Mag body is a bit smaller and a few thousandths shorter. If worse comes to worse, I can set the barrel back and put in a new rear sight dovetail on the bottom.

Should be an interesting project.

Couldn't an Armi Sport barrel be adapted? I realise that the threads may be different but I'm sure if you asked Armi Sport (through Taylor's I believe on your side of the Pond) they could supply you with a .44/40 barrel blank that you could thread yourself. They are really nice people to deal with.

Blackpowder Burn

I had the same issue some years ago - a '92 carbine with a badly pitted barrel.  My local gunsmith couldn't find a '92 barrel, but had a '94 barrel in 44-40 that fit perfectly.

The only problem is that my '92 now has a barrel that's labeled '94 on it!  ::)
