Here's another vote fer Fairshake's press.  You can mount it on a slab of wood and clamp it in the workbench that OT showed you.  Takes up very little space.  Then, track down a jug of black powder and slap one'a Springfield Slim's pills on a case, and yer cookin' with Gas!

Caution: Reloading is thoroughly addictive and leads to major expenditures to Dillon and other fine U.S.A. companies.

+1 JD - I even built a house with a special hidden room just for reloading!  :)

Kflach - I have an extra set of carbide 38/357 dies that I'll send to you if you give me your address.  I've also got some excess 38 spl brass I'll throw in.  I shoot 44 and 45 caliber stuff nowadays and just don't use it.

That's what I need!  I do my loading and casting in the shed behind the house. Problem is, it's too easy fer my wife to find me.  If I had a hidden room....   ;D
(some men sneak away from their wives to carouse with other women or to gamble. I sneak away to play with my reloading stuff.  Not sure which one's a sign of better mental health)  ;D 8)

well reloading doesnt cost that much to get started, it will increase in costs as you add this and that to your reloading bench. the plus side is you will be able to work up a more accurate load for your iron and with some of the laws that are coming into effect(the peoples republic of california) being able to load your own will take the commiecrates out of the loop a little more, they hate people who reload, thats a good reason to reload. also if you have winters like we do here in idaho, its something to do when its to cold to go outside. gotzguns

yep, Reloading, ain't it grand, you go broke saving money!

I hear there are guys who are actually sensible and keep to basic gear and just turn out cheap but good hunting and plnking ammo.

I strongly suggest you add the cost of a scale to that $80. Dippers are fine for Black Powder, but I really don't suggest using one with small Smokeless charges. And add the cost of a reliable powder measure, so you don't wind up weighing every charge. Lee makes an inexpensive one.

And let's not forget the most important piece of equipment of all, a reloading manual. Buy it and read it before you spend one red cent on any other equipment. Lee publishes a fine manual. I started with the Lyman Pistol and Revolver Handbook, which I also recommend.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Great suggestions, Driftwood.

Here's an $18 expenditure worth its weight in gold (or lead):

Scales are essential;

Here is LEE's basic safety powder scale.

For a digital scale, do an internet search.  There are scales from about $20 or so.  For the more capable versions you might go $100.  Or just drop down to your local "hydroponic" supply outlet!

Good points on the scale and the manual.  I've got an RCBS balance scale and a Speer manual I'll throw into the bargain.  I use digital scales now and the manual is an extra than I don't need.  I'd like to see them go to someone that can put them to use.  So, to summarize, I'll contribute the following free of charge if you send me your mailing address:

  • 1 set of carbide 38/357 dies
  • 38 special brass

  • 1 RCBS balance scale
  • Speer reloading manual

The press is already mounted on a piece of 2x6 so that you just clamp it to where you need it. I now do that with all my equipment even though I have 2 loading benches and a casting bench. The black and Decker is a great fold and put away bench that can be put under the bed with all the other things you have. Do not say anything to SWMBO and everything will be fine. I would say that with all the kind offers that have been made, the ball is in your court. Later David

Thanks ya'll!

I spent some time over the weekend looking at different benches and figuring out space in the garage. I'm please to report that things looks workable!

I've sent PMs to Fairshake and Aggie Desparado.

I *really* appreciate the help!

Yur very welcome.   Most shooters have collected lots of "stuff" that they have upgraded from and don't use anymore and are willing to pass it on to folks starting out.  One of my three presses was given to me for free by someone that had bought a bigger and fancier one.  And another was about 1/3 the price of it new.  Do I really "need" three presses ? . . . no . . . but it is nice to have them.  One small "Lee" press can be taken along in my camper and clamped to the table for use.  The Lee turret press is handy for loading pistol ammunition.  And the big RCBS "junior" is powerful for forming cases and for loading .45-70 rifle for long range shooting. But . . . ya don't have to have lots of stuff.  Especially if your just loading pistol cartridges with black powder.

Hopefully you are gonna load "real black powder" ?

Smokeless Powder is just a passing fad, . . . it will never catch on or be popular.   ;)

I'll start with Goex FFFG, the Holy Black. I'm not completely against the heathen stuff, but I'll start off right.

Good start, Elmer Keith recommended in 'Sixguns' that one should start with BP as you could fill the case to overflowing and not go wrong, which is definetly not the case with most smokeless powders.
